Abstract

The Association of Portuguese Language Universities (AULP) was created almost thirty years ago, ten years ahead of the establishment of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP). Benefiting from an initial impetus from the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities (CRUP) and its President, Professor António Simões Lopes, then Rector of the Technical University of Lisbon, the Association was formalized in 1986 in the city of Praia (Cape Verde). A fortnight of higher education institutions from six Portuguese-speaking countries (Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique and Portugal) agreed to form AULP.
