Abstract
Initially, I would like to register my acknowledgment to the creators of AULP and their presidents, in particular to Prof. António Simões Lopes, his
first President (1986-1996), but also to those who succeeded him, Profs. Ruy Pauleti (1996-1999), Brazão Mazula (1999-2002), João Teta (2002-2005),
Adriano Pimpão (2005-2006), João Guerreiro (2006-2008), Ronaldo Tadeu Pena (2008-2009), Jorge Ferrão (2011-2014) and the current president, Prof. Rui Martins.
Although my term of office was only a year and a half, as I was completing UFMG's term in office, this was the great
opportunity that I had, as Rector of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (2010-2014), to strengthen our ties with Portugal, with Portuguese-speaking African nations, Angola, Cape Verde, Mozambique Guinea Bissau and São Tome and Príncipe, and with Macau and East Timor.
