Abstract

Despite the fact that university studies in Macau have a tradition that dates back to 1594 - with the foundation by the Jesuits of the former University College of São Paulo, the first western university in China, whose facade is still the most famous “ex-libris” in the world today. territory and the cornerstone of the building that was classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2005 - they suffered a long interruption since the 16th century and until the creation in 1981 of the University of East Asia - UAO, a private university with the land granted by the government, that marked the beginning of modern higher education in Macau. During the first few years after the establishment of the UAO, the majority of students came from Hong Kong. Subsequently, the then Portuguese administration of Macau, taking into account the need to train local human resources for the transition period (1987-1999, according to the Joint Luso-Chinese Declaration), and before the transfer of the Territory's sovereignty to China, proceeded to acquire UAO through the Macau Foundation in 1988.
