Health during the COVID-19 Pandemic: challenges faced by people with disabilities and their families and caregivers

Abstract
With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, countries have adhered to restrictive measures to reduce the spread and lethality of the virus. In this context, people with disabilities in a vulnerable state faced new challenges, along with their overburdened family members and caregivers. Thus, the present study aimed to detect the challenges faced by people with disabilities and their caregivers, emphasizing the impacts that the pandemic generated on biopsychosocial well-being. Difficulties in adapting to preventive measures, communication, access to health services and social inclusion are exposed. There was still an increase in depressive symptoms and anxiety in people with disabilities and in their caregivers, who were more tired and stressed, due to the amount of functions performed. Therefore, the recognition of difficulties seeks to result in future changes, namely in the improvement of public policies, creation of new technologies and research that contribute to greater inclusion and equity.

Adriana Cavaco, Universidade do Algarve
Graduated in Orthoprosthetics from the University of Algarve and PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Coimbra. Professor at the Higher School of Health of the University of Algarve since 2009, where she currently serves as Director of the Departmental Area of Orthoprosthetics. Coordinator and supervisor of several projects for the development of biomedical materials and devices. Author and co-author of several scientific publications and oral communications and reviewer of scientific articles in indexed journals in the field of Bioengineering and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Member of the CIEPQPF Research Center of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra. She is part of the Coordinating Committee of the Volunteering Group of the University of Algarve UAlg V+ and is a volunteer in several projects. It has wide participation in the associative movement.
Cristina Galli, Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais
Undergraduate student in Nursing at the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais, Poços de Caldas campus. Performs academic mobility at the Higher School of Health of the University of Algarve, Faro, Portugal. She has secondary education (high school) at the Peixoto Gomide State School (2017). Member of the League of Pediatrics. Voluntarily integrated the extension projects “Entre-Laços: Permanent Education in Health” and “Posso Ajudar”. Academic highlight of the first half of 2018 and 2019 by the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais. Participation in symposiums, seminars and events in the area of Nursing.
