There's a lot of talk about the Blue Economy these days, but in reality, not much is actually being done in line with its concepts and principles. The Blue Economy is a key driver of sustainable development in island and coastal countries. However, many view it as simply an investment in the ocean, which fails to recognise the importance of environmental and social sustainability. Some national and regional policies just see the ocean as a source of funding to support their national economies, which is wrong and even dangerous. The concepts and principles of the Blue Economy are well defined and described, but it's a shame that they're often overlooked or ignored. We need to make sure that biodiversity, climate change, pollution and marine litter are treated the same as marine resources, tourism and maritime transport. Each of these sectors is important because they depend on each other. For example, biodiversity is crucial for biotechnology and the sustainable use of biological resources.
